Eye Movement Desensitisation and Reprocessing [EMDR], is a technique used to resolve symptoms of Post Traumatic Stress Disorder. When a traumatic, uncontrollable or overwhelming experience happens to us the memory is not processed in the brain and resolved like everyday experiences, it therefore continues to cause us upset and distress.
This technique is considered helpful due to its simplicity and is evidenced to ease emotional distress quicker than other types of psychotherapy. The beauty of this technique is that you do not necessarily have to talk about your experiences.
The process replicates REM sleep, when your eyes flicker left to right whilst sleeping, when this happens memories are processed and stored away. Traumatic and Emotional distress is not stored as easily, so EMDR manually helps this process by the client watching a hand, light, sound or pulse from left to right to simulate this.
Clients have reported feeling, calmer, relaxed, happy and free when they have completed therapy, as well as making sense of their experiences, no longer feeling to blame, shame or guilt.
