Therapeutic play is a well established discipline which is based on a number of psychological theories. A safe, caring and confidential environment allows a child to play with as few limits as possible, only some for physical/emotional safety may be applied. The therapeutic play space creates a non-judgemental, accepting and empathic environment for the child to express themselves freely.
The therapist reflects on the child observations and what happens during the session if this is appropriate. This the the childs 'time' and often in our lives we never seem to have enough time to spend with children, just playing or being with them.
Sessions can last from 30 to 45 minutes, can be individual or small groups of children. Some of the techniques that can be used are: relaxation, visualisation, drama - role play, art - drawing, music, story telling, dance & movement.
